Several years ago I treated myself to a really nice sewing table, with lots of drawers, etc. But I quickly realized that storing quilt rulers and templates was not going to work in a drawer. For one thing, they take up too much space. And when they are stacked on top of one another, you forget which ones you have! My husband helped me with a solution. I am not particularly handy with hammer and nail, but if I can design it, he is usually willing to help me make it!
I’ve seen several options, but decided a peg board would work best. This is actually a very easy DIY project! We cut the peg board to 48″x22″. The frame on the back was made using 2″x2″ white pine strips. The frame corners were mitered and assembled into a 48″x22″ frame using 6 penny finishing nails. Nails were counter-sunk and the holes filled with wood filler. Next the frame was attached to the peg board with self-tapping screws. The final assembly step was to sand the frame and the edges of the peg board.
The frame and front of the peg board were painted semi-gloss white with a small roller. Simple picture hanging hardware was attached to the back of the top two corners.
All quilt rulers and templates seem to come with a small hole, ready-made at the top. There are numerous peg board hook options. I like that in addition to hanging a quilt ruler, I can hang the instructions behind it!
This is extremely functional. I can just look at this storage wall, and get new ideas! Like – “Hey! I haven’t used that ruler in a while… I wonder what I could make?!?!”
Possibilities are endless for hanging other sewing, quilting, craft items on a peg board – look around your sewing room! Scissors, rolls of tape, ribbon… And you can get fancy with shelves, containers, and more. Have fun, and GET ORGANIZED!
